Titans hit Lakers for 5

The Lane Titans entered the game knowing that a win was expected in their pursuit of the 3rd and final playoff spot from the NWAACC’s Southern Region. They set about their business quickly, pushing into SOCC’s half. Lanes’ playoff hopes took a blow in the 4th minute as some poor defense allowed the Laker’s forward to walk in and score a near post goal. Wounded, the Titans responded in quick fashion as Sophomore captain Mackenzie Fegles #10 answered by taking on 2 Laker defenders and calmly placing a shot past the opposition’s keeper.

With the game tied at 1-1 the game settled in to Lane holding a territorial advantage but failing to register again until the 31st. In a wonderful team move beginning with Haelee Staskiewitz winning possession on the edge of her own third and finding Fegles, now playing right back. Two nicely weighted passes from Fegles and then Shelby Henry found Forward Sarah Jones in behind the defense. A blistering shot was blocked but not held by the keeper and Sophomore Alyssa Williamson was there to clean up with a one touch finish into the net.
Happy, but not satisfied to have the lead Lane set out to score a third. Several opportunities came and passed without. In the 44th Fegles quickly took a free kick from 27 yards and tucked it just under the bar giving the Titans a 3-1 advantage at intermission.

The second half began with more Lane attacks. In the 53rd Jenna Stewart was fouled between the penalty box and the right touch line. Fegles again stood over the kick, but this time she connected with center defender Stephanie Pepperling at the back post in Lanes 4th goal of the match.
To cap off an offensive explosion Fegles connected with Tina Jackson-Berger for a near post header from a Fegles corner-kick to beat the keeper at the near post. The game ended 5-1 to the Titans, the result puts them 4 points ahead of Clark for 3rd in the Southern Region. Clark comes to town on Halloween for a game that could seal the Titans playoff birth with a win.

After the game coach Ellis praised his team “The girls really came out with a clear desire to win. We have had some disappointing results this season and they seemed determined not to let this continue.”
