Lane's Shurtliff and O'Connnor capture NWAC Multi-Event Championships

EUGENE, OR - Lane freshman Grant Shurtliff and Lane sophomore Kylee O'Connor captured the 2016 NWAC Multi-Event titles under fair conditions today at Lane Community College.

O'Connor was the first to earn her championship title and did it in true championship form during the final event, the 800 meter run with a personal best time of 2:20.75.

Coming into the 800m event she trailed Clackamas sophomore Ericka Pengelly by just 35 points, but also needed a solid time to hold off Spokane freshman Katie Collins, who trailed O'Connor by 142 entering the 800.

Pengelly took third overall while Collins moved into second with a third placed finish in the 800.

Shurtliff trailed Spokane freshman Tyler Blakely by 292 points coming into day 2, but made up ground in the 110m Hurdles and Discus  to close the gap to just 58 points.

Shurtliff pulled ahead for good in the Pole Vault with an event second best result of 14-03.25 to put him into a solid 240 point lead over Blakely, a lead Shurtliff never relinquished.

Blakely then slipped to third place as teammate sophomore Andrew Stich propelled into second place with first place finishes in the final two events.

Shurtliff's 6587 points places him with the 18th best score in the history of the NWAC Decathlon dating back to 1947.

O'Connor, Collins and Pengelly earn All-American honors on the women's side while Shurtliff, Stich and Blakely earned All-American honors for the men.

The All-American honor is O'Connor's second as a Heptathlete - she also placed third in the 2015 event.

The 2016 Track and Field Championships will resume on May 23-24 at Mt. Hood Community College [championship website].
