Lane drops Treasure Valley 6-2

Ontario—No hits with runners in scoring position is what hurt the Treasure Valley Community College baseball team Saturday.

The Chukars tallied six hits, received three walks and had a hit batter, but went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position, had a runner thrown out at the plate in their 6-2 loss to Lane Community College in second day action of the Hanigan Kickoff Classic Baseball Tournament at Elks Memorial Field in Ontario.

Lane struck first blood in the opening frame with a pair of runs off TVCC starting pitcher Brock Jessup.

Brendan Hindle and Kevin Shepherd led off with back-to-back walks, and teammate John Miles added a single to load the bases.

With one out, Brooks McKee fought off an inside pitch for a blooper down the right field line for a two-run single to give Lane a 2-0 advantage.

fourth inning, Hindle and Shepherd reached base on back-to-back singles and Miles cashed them in with a two-run double.

The top of the order for Lane, Hindle, Shepherd and Miles killed TVCC pitching going a combined 6-for-9 with three walks, two doubles and four runs scored.

In the sixth inning down 4-0, the Chukars had their best opportunity to break even.

KC Qualls reached on a single to right field, and with one out, Mike Tevlin added a another single to right to put runners on first and third with one out.

A wild pitch chased home Qualls to make the score 4-1, and Tevlin advanced to second base.

Perry Wilkinson worked a walk to put runners at first and second and, No. 5 hitter Josh Campbell at the dish.

Campbell laced a single to right, and Tevlin raced home. The throw by the Lane rightfielder Andrew Goodpaster sailed past the cutoff man, and past the catcher, all the way to the backstop.

Tevlin scored, and Wilkinson was sent home. Wilkinson was gunned down at the plate by catcher Kyle Hansen, who tossed a perfect throw to pitcher Brody Potter for the second out.

That play would hurt.

On the very next pitch, Potter uncorked a wild pitch, and Campbell raced to third. Wade Elliott had a chance to draw the Chukars closer, but he struck out swinging to end the inning, and TVCC was down 4-2 going into the bottom of the sixth inning.

In the seventh, Lane put up two insurance runs to swell the lead to 6-2, and they never looked back.

In all, Lane rattled off 10 hits and received six walks. Along with the top three, McKee and teammate Cory Staniforth added two hits apiece.

The losing pitcher was Jessup, who tossed four innings, allowed six hits, walked four and struck out two.

Qualls, Matt Comer, Tevlin, Wilkinson, Campbell and Nigel Morton had a hit apiece to lead TVCC.
